Celebrating St. Nicholas

On December 6th it is the Feast of St. Nicholas. Today I wanted to share with you some of our favorite activities to do this special day. I love this feast day because it reminds me to focus on a real person that existed that did so much good in secret and continues to inspire people. I do not tell my kids about Santa, but instead I tell them about a real person, St Nicholas.

I usually pick a story to tell about St. Nicholas to my kids. There are a lot of great ones and there is a place for free stories here. Choose one that speaks to your kids and try to retell it using puppets for the younger ones or by the fire while you retell it. The younger kids love to recreate the story with the puppets and there’s something magical about storytelling by the fire on a cold winter day.

There are also some crafts you can do with free instructions here and a clay craft here.

If you need some easy recipes they are here. My favorite is the strawberry and banana breakfast that looks like a candy cane.

While you are doing these crafts and baking these recipes it is great to talk about St. Nicholas. I use these basic points to discuss with my own kids.

Those are some basic ideas to get you started on the celebration. I also wanted to share with you a list that I use for a random acts of kindness that I use every year to help bring out focus onto kindness instead of gifts. You can do an act every day and talk about it with your kids at bedtime in how they did their good deed.

Feel free to copy onto notecards and each person pick a card to do each day at random! I had this list printed out a few years ago so if you have a link please let me know.
