Homeschooling can be hard at times as well as rewarding. It is easy to loose track of reasons why we homeschool and just go with the flow at times. This time of the year is a perfect opportunity to remind ourselves why we love to homeschool. Your reasons may vary but here are my own main reminders.
Freedom
You have the freedom to do what you need and want. You have the freedom to choose the right curriculum for your kids and different curriculum for ones that learn in a different way. You have the freedom to schedule your lessons during the afternoon or during the morning. You have the freedom to take a day off when you feel overwhelmed and go to the park. You have he freedom to school year round or only 9 months out of the year. You have the freedom to choose
Time
People always say “they grow up too fast,” and kids do. Before you know it they will be out of the house and you will be looking for something to fill your own time with. By homeschooling your kids, you get more time with them. I realize that on some days that may not look like something you’re thankful for, but just remember that those days are normal to have and keep moving forward. Those times sitting and reading on the couch with kids cuddled up is precious. As homeschoolers you get to see time change as the years pass. You get to experience the growth of a child’s development by seeing them learn new concepts and grasping old ones. Time is definitely something to be grateful for.
Activities
This goes along with freedom because you can choose the activities that your kids attend outside your own school time. Usually in a school setting art, for example, is limited. If you have a little artist on your hands then you can choose to enroll them in an art class where they will thrive. You can supplement your teaching weakness with a class. I am a terrible foreign language teacher for instance, and will be outsourcing that to supplement for that. There are so many activity opportunities outside of school but some parents have to go from school to activity, leaving less time at home and more time driving from place to place. Choosing activities based on different personalities and schedules is a definite plus in our homeschooling.
So there you are my own top 3 things to be thankful for in homeschooling. I am sure there are a lot more that you can think of that would go on your own list. Now is the time to reflect back on your year so far and find some of your own that you can remember.

With the freedom of home schooling, the structure is what you make. For some things, it’s just work. For others, it’s practicality and creativity. For instance, baking a cake together, learning steps, organization, and measurements, not to mention the five senses (i.e. sight, smell, taste, hearing the oven). Writing a letter to a business will encourage good grammar, for you can explain well-written letters are more often responded to by businesses. Then, you can visit the business, learning about products and advertisements, also watching commercials in a different way. It’s all a matter of how you see things, also thinking outside the box.
